Danielle LaRoach – About to step into her biggest role yet!

Known for her roles in A House Divided, Tyler Perry’s Zatima, and Girl in the Closet, Danielle LaRoach is back at it with her lead role in the new crime-drama-horror Darwin. She has a lot more on her plate, but we will get into that…

Hi Danielle, it’s an absolute pleasure catching up with you. To begin, how are you doing? How has the year been for you so far?

I’m doing wonderfully, and this year has been especially transformative as I embrace motherhood. Now, with a toddler, balancing the incredible journey of motherhood with my career has deepened my perspective and strengthened my faith in God, giving me even more tenacity to face challenges and celebrate every blessing.

I’m also thrilled about the projects lined up this year, especially stepping into my first lead role in a film. It’s going to be a remarkable chapter, and I’m looking forward to what’s ahead!

What sparked your interest in acting that made you decide to take this career path?

From a young age, I was captivated by the magic of storytelling. Growing up surrounded by inspiring individuals and unforgettable experiences, I knew early on that acting was my true calling. My passion for the craft was ignited by the wonder of watching characters come to life on screen, and I’ve pursued this path with the belief that every role offers an opportunity to inspire and bring hope. My love for acting began with the youth company at the Baton Rouge Little Theater, and this passion has since opened doors to incredible opportunities both on the stage and the big screen.

Who are some of your top influencers and veteran actresses?

I have immense respect for veteran actresses who have redefined the industry with their depth and authenticity. Viola Davis is a monumental influence with her powerful presence and raw emotion on screen, and I also draw inspiration from the incomparable Meryl Streep. Their careers remind me to always strive for excellence and authenticity in every performance.

Additionally, I have a great admiration for Tyler Perry. His ability to create compelling stories, build a successful empire, and offer opportunities to so many talented individuals, including myself, is truly inspiring. His work has had a profound impact on the industry, and his dedication to storytelling and empowering others is something I deeply respect and aspire to emulate.

I know mentors play a huge role in helping a person grow in their craft. Do you have a mentor or mentors? Who are they and why did you choose them?

Absolutely. One of the greatest mentors in my life has been Kevin Benton, an acting coach whose guidance has been instrumental in honing my craft. His mentorship has taught me how to

channel my emotions, embrace vulnerability, and push past my limits. With his help, I’ve learned that with God’s grace and relentless tenacity, no challenge is insurmountable.

I’ve also been incredibly fortunate to work with Natarsha Garcia. When I first moved to Atlanta, I had the opportunity to work as her assistant, and that experience shaped so much of who I am today. Natarsha not only taught me the ins and outs of the industry, but also instilled in me the importance of faith, resilience, and discipline. Watching her navigate this business with such strength and purpose was truly inspiring. She reinforced my belief that success isn’t just about talent—it’s about perseverance, preparation, and trusting God’s timing. I carry those lessons with me in every role I take on and every challenge I face.

What are some roles you’ve played so far? Do you think you have a particular style or preference for a certain type of role?

I’ve had the opportunity to play a variety of roles that truly resonate with me. For instance, I love portraying Belinda, a comedic villainous character on Tyler Perry’s Zatima, which allowed me to explore humor and character complexity. On the other hand, my role as Nancy in Lifetime’s Girl in the Closet was much more emotionally charged, rooted in a true story that hit very close to home. I’m drawn to roles that challenge me and provide the opportunity to share raw, emotional truths, reflecting my personal journey of faith and perseverance.

You are a brand ambassador. What brands are you working with, and what makes you stand out as a brand ambassador?

I truly enjoy being a brand ambassador for Hairbrella—a satin-lined rain hat created by Black woman entrepreneur Tracey Pickett, designed to blend style with functionality. I’m passionate about empowering others through authenticity and beauty, and this role aligns perfectly with my values. My journey as an actress and a mom, shaped by strong values and relentless tenacity, allows me to connect deeply with audiences and inspire confidence in every product I represent.

You have a huge passion for empowering those battling cancer, which I think is very admirable. Tell me more about this passion.

This passion comes from a very personal place. In 2019, I lost my father to lung cancer—a loss that has deeply shaped my perspective on life. Additionally, my mother’s strength as a three-time breast cancer survivor continues to inspire me daily. These experiences have motivated me to work closely with the Baton Rouge Cancer Society, where I help provide wigs at no cost to women battling cancer. I believe that by empowering others through compassion and support, we can truly make a difference during life’s most challenging moments.

Style: How would you describe your personal style? And which actress, outside of yourself, has the best style?

My personal style is an expression of my inner strength and creative spirit—a blend of classic elegance with bold modern twists. I enjoy experimenting with textures and silhouettes that tell a story. When I think about impeccable style, I am drawn to the fearless fashion choices of Lupita Nyong’o. Her unique approach to style inspires me to continually evolve and embrace my individuality.

What do you think about the current style trends? Are you a trend follower, or do you dance to the beat of your own drum?

I appreciate the vibrancy of current style trends, but I’m not one to simply follow them blindly. I dance to the beat of my own drum, curating a look that feels timeless and uniquely “me.” While I enjoy infusing contemporary elements into my wardrobe, my style remains a personal statement influenced by my acting journey, faith, and the diverse experiences that shape my life.

Tell us about your new project Darwin and what makes this an exciting project for you.

Darwin has been an incredibly empowering project for me, pushing me in ways I never expected. Created by the dynamic duo Ali and Aaron Abdin, this film dives into the complexities of survival, human evolution, and the raw nature of transformation. It’s been a deeply personal experience, as the story’s themes of resilience, fear, and strength resonate with my own journey. I’ve had the opportunity to explore the depths of vulnerability and courage, which has been both challenging and rewarding.

In the film, I portray Tahj, a fierce and determined young woman caught in a deadly game of survival after a high-stakes urban heist takes a brutal turn. As part of a group of young hustlers, we find ourselves hunted by a sadistic predator, and the tension throughout the film is palpable. Darwin has given me the chance to push the boundaries of my craft—showcasing not just emotional depth but also physical intensity. This role truly allowed me to stretch as an actress, and I’m proud of the range I was able to bring to the screen.
